An American Airlines flight from Guatemala to Miami Saturday was revealed to have one additional passenger on board: A man who had stowed away in the plane’s landing gear.

A video posted on Instagram by Miami local social news site Only in Dade showed airport crewmembers apparently discovering the passenger after the plane arrived at the gate.

The man, who came off of American Airlines flight 1182, which landed about 10 a.m. ET Saturday, was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The maintenance worker who recorded the video declined to speak on the record for fear that he would lose his job.

American Airlines said in a statement the flight”was met by law enforcement due to a security issue. We are working with law enforcement in their investigation.”

Samuel Orozco, a spokesperson for the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics, Guatemala’s civil aviation authority, said the matter was still under investigation in the Central American country and could not provide further details at this time.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the law enforcement agency charged with enforcing U.S. federal laws concerning border control, customs, trade, and immigration, could not be reached for comment on Saturday.

Dan Vasquez, a member of the content team at Only in Dade said, “We received this video and spoke to the person that took it, he was very scared and it is unbelievable that someone would survive this.”

“Can you imagine that kind of wind pressure?” Vasquez said.

Johannesburg:

Anxious-looking travellers stood in long queues at Johannesburg’s international airport on Friday, desperate to squeeze onto the last flights to countries that had just shut their doors to South Africa.

Many cut short their holidays, rushing back from safaris and vineyards when Britain announced late Thursday night that all flights from South Africa and its neighbours would be banned the following day.

A flurry of nations have since followed suit, concerned about the discovery of a new coronavirus variant with a large number of mutations fuelling an infection resurgence in South Africa.

UK citizen Toby Reid, a 24-year-old trader in London, was camping on Cape Town’s Table Mountain with his girlfriend when the ban was announced.

India set to resume overseas flights, tightens screening for new COVID-19 variant

By Neha Arora

NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India said on Friday it will resume international passenger flights from mid-December with COVID-19 linked curbs for “at risk” countries, and ordered tightened screening at borders as fears over a new coronavirus variant spread globally.

The federal health ministry said reports of mutations in the variant, identified as B.1.1.529, had “serious public health implications”, and asked states to adopt rigorous screening and testing for all passengers from South Africa and other “at risk” countries.

“This variant is reported to have a significantly high number of mutations, and thus, has serious public health implications for the country in view of recently relaxed visa restrictions and opening up of international travel,” health secretary Rajesh Bhushan said in a letter to states late on Thursday.

But India’s civil aviation ministry said it had decided to let airlines resume scheduled international flights from Dec. 15, lifting a nearly two-year-old ban imposed to stem the spread of COVID-19.

The resumption of flights would be based on the coronavirus risk levels of individual countries, according to a formal government order.

Some countries in Europe and Asia have rushed to tighten border controls and restrict travel nL1N2SH089 because of the new variant.

India’s foreign ministry said there was no immediate information on steps the government was taking.

“This is a developing incident,” foreign ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi told a news conference.

The federal health ministry did not respond to a Reuters request for further comment.

On Friday, the UK Health Security Agency https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/uk-flags-concern-over-newly-identified-coronavirus-variant-2021-11-25 said the new variant has a spike protein that was dramatically different to the one in the original coronavirus that COVID-19 vaccines are based and could make existing vaccines less effective.

Britain has banned flights from six African countries, and asked returning British travellers from those destinations to quarantine.

India, the world’s second-worst affected country by COVID-19, posted the smallest rise in new cases https://www.reuters.com/world/india/india-logs-slimmest-rise-covid-19-cases-543-days-despite-festivals-2021-11-23 in one-and-a-half years this week, due to increased vaccinations and antibodies in a large section of its population from previous infections.

Its total cases of coronavirus reached 34.56 million on Friday. India’s daily caseload has halved since September and it reported 10,549 new cases on Friday.

Earlier this month, India identified 10 countries “at risk” including Europe, China, South Africa, and New Zealand, among others, and has opened its borders to 99 countries overall.

Indian shares fell more than 2% on Friday, in line with declines in markets across Asia as investors fled risky assets panicking over the potential impact of the new variant.

A 35-year-old man missing from his family’s home in the Florida Keys remained unaccounted for Thursday, and the U.S. Coast Guard said there’s no sign of the boat that he regularly skippered off Sugarloaf Key.

Jason Heath was scheduled to drive up to New Jersey to join his family there this Thanksgiving week, but his father reported him missing on Tuesday. Heath’s car was still in the driveway of the family’s waterfront Sugarloaf home when police arrived, dogs barking inside, lights on, an open container of yogurt on the kitchen counter and food still in a pressure cooker turned on, according to a report from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office..

But the blue 25-foot Panga center-console powerboat was missing from the dock. A neighbor across the canal reported seeing it there Monday night, but not Tuesday morning.

Heath’s father, already in New Jersey, spoke to his son around noon Monday. Heath didn’t mention any plans for taking the boat out, though he did regularly use it, according to the police report.

‘Floating seven-star resort’: Ultra-luxury cruise ship makes Miami home (pics)

MSC Cruises

The Seabourn Ovation, part of Carnival Corporation’s ultra luxury cruise brand, has a new home in Miami for the winter cruise season.

It’s the first time the high-end cruise ship, where suites average at $1,000 a night, has sailed out of Miami. The ship was completed in May 2018 with the intention of being based out of Australia during the winter months. But the pandemic changed that.

“With Australia and most of Asia still closed, we decided to base the ship in Miami for this winter — this is, after all, the cruise capital of the world,” said Josh Leibowitz, the president of Seabourn.
